Some Background

My family survived Katrina and the DoD Project I work on relocated me back north, closer to mom and dad (Pittsburgh is home, town of the awesome Steelers). We decided to stay here for many reasons, and I realized that the DC/Northern VA area, which has a lot of software development companies.

So, I joined Northrop Grumman and was quite happy. Now, as my project comes to an end and I start my search for other positions in my company, I see that a higher security clearance is often required (along the lines of TS/SCI) – something that is very expensive to get. Many companies in the region require some level of DoD clearance since their biggest customer is most likely the U.S. Government. So I figure I need to get my certification to be more of an attraction to potential opportunities either in Northrop or outside of it.

Which Certification to Get?

I went to the Microsoft Certification and Training website. It had changed some since I was last there, and the certifications had changed somewhat.
Since I was a Non-certified Professional, there were two options:

  • MCITP – Microsoft Certified IT Professional.
This track seemed more geared for IT Professionals who serve as System Administrators, not my cup of java.
  • MCPD – Microsoft Certified Professional Developer.
This is the certification I will go for, it is for developers.

Determining My Learning Plan

I have a membership in IEEE Computer Society and ACM which gives me access to a lot of the Safari Books and ElementK Training series, but they do not have the latest material for all of the MCPD certifications. Since some of the books for MCPD on Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 are not yet available, I decided to follow the MCPD on Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 series – it uses .NET 3.5.

The MCPD on Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 contains:

  1. Windows Developer 3.5 on Visual Studio 2008
  2. ASP.NET Developer 3.5 on Visual Studio 2008 (Requires: EXAM 70-562, EXAM 70-536*, EXAM 70-504, EXAM 70-564)
  3. Enterprise Application Developer 3.5 on Visual Studio 2008

NOTE: This PDF contains the Certification Paths. It really clarifies all the options.

I purchased the book MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-562): Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 – ASP.NET from Amazon to prepare for EXAM 70-562.

IEEE Computer Society has the training book for EXAM 70-536MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-536): Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Foundation.

Will post my progress.
